• I worked on adding CRUD functionality to the portal, from the EmberJs frontend to the Serverless API. This mostly used DynamoDB, API Gateway and Lambda, with an interesting implementation of DynamoDB with Lambda triggers to sync with an Aurora database for list routes to get around secondary index issues.


• I setup a database migration strategy using Umzug to migrate database schema


• Worked with the team to implement authentication on the React-Native app using AWS Cognito and Amplify


• Was involved with planning the API and infrastructure, mapping out data access patterns and deciding on the most suitable services to use in AWS and GCP


• Contributed to setting up CircleCI on each of the codebases to allow automatic deployment of the infrastructure, API, portal and app to different environments


• Helped setup multiple environments for an IoT project, including setting up Terraform infrastructure, a Serverless API, an EmberJs portal and React-Native app


• Joined an established team helping make a step by step navigation component for a Cordova app

I did something in 2019

• Helped make a React Native app with styling, animations, and SVG functionality for both iOS and Android, including the thermostat radial for setting heating temperatures.


• Developed key features for the React Native app, such as Smart Interface registration, push/in-app notifications, and fault displays.


• Integrated React Redux for state management and WebSocket communication to issue commands and receive data from IoT thermostats.


• Created a demo mode to prevent WebSocket errors during user testing and set up accounts with correct initial states for smooth testing.


• Incorporated user testing feedback to improve app functionality and design, ensuring alignment with client specifications.


• Contributed to implementing client-specified designs while adding features and enhancing usability throughout the app.


• Built a simulator using Golang and a React site to mimic hardware messages, facilitating development via AWS IoT Core with MQTT communication.


• Added functionality to the IoT portal, including authentication flows and device dashboards, enabling customer support to diagnose thermostat issues.

I did something in 2020

• I moved back to the IoT heating project, having missed the launch of the Halo system. Fortunately, I was able to integrate back into the project quickly.


• At this point, I worked on a personal project for a friend using Elixir and LiveView. The project involved scraping a games database to display wins, losses, and other game statistics. I learned the hard way how convoluted it can be to host an Elixir project on AWS—never again… just use Gigalixir!


• My experience with Elixir allowed me to hit the ground running, and using LiveView was a treat. This was a short-term project, but I really enjoyed working with Elixir and LiveView.


• I then joined the Axiom project, a website for tracking corporate carbon emissions. It involved an Elixir API with a Phoenix LiveView portal.


• Work then transitioned to a redesign of the Ember.js customer support portal. I worked closely with the designer’s Sketch designs to implement the interface as closely as possible to the original.


• I gained experience working with larger datasets, processing and batching transactions, and exporting them as CSV reports.


• I worked with GenServers in Elixir for handling transaction processing.


• As my responsibilities grew, I was frequently deploying work to production.


• I expanded my role by taking on more horizontal slices of work, connecting the React Native app to the Elixir API (using JSON API and the Phoenix framework), and displaying information in the Ember.js portal.


• I was given the challenge of adding transaction grouping functionality to the Elixir API. Despite being new to Elixir, I quickly got up to speed and delivered the feature within the sprint.


• I was then moved to the Expensemate project, which involved an Elixir/Phoenix API, a React Native app, and an Ember.js portal. The goal was to help manage company cards and process expenses through an app.


• I continued working on features for the heating app, preparing it for launch.
